What are dental crowns and bridges?
Crowns and bridges are two of the most common — and most useful — restorations in dentistry. Both rebuild what’s broken or missing, and both are designed to look completely natural.
A crown
A crown is like a custom-made cap that fits over your existing tooth. We use them when a tooth is too damaged for just a filling — maybe it’s cracked, broken, worn down, or has had a root canal. The crown covers and protects the whole tooth, restoring its strength and appearance.
A bridge
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It uses the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors, with a replacement tooth in the middle. It’s a fixed, permanent solution — no removing it like a denture.
“A well-made crown or bridge feels just like your own tooth. You’ll forget it’s there — which is exactly the point.”
When you might need a crown
- You have a large cavity that’s too big for a filling
- A tooth is cracked or broken
- You’ve had a root canal (most teeth need a crown afterward)
- A tooth is severely worn down from grinding
- You want to improve the look of a damaged tooth
- You have a dental implant that needs its final restoration
When a bridge might be right for you
- You’re missing one or more teeth in a row
- You’re not a candidate for implants, or prefer not to have surgery
- The teeth next to the gap could use crowns anyway
- You want a faster solution than implants (which take several months)
If you’re missing teeth, we’ll always walk you through both options — bridges and implants — and help you choose the one that fits your situation best.
What to expect
1. The exam and plan
We’ll take a 3D scan of your mouth, talk through your options, and design a restoration that fits your bite, your smile, and the way your teeth match. You’ll see a preview before we move forward.
2. Preparing the tooth (or teeth)
We numb the area completely, then gently shape the tooth (or teeth) so the crown will fit perfectly. For a bridge, we shape the teeth on either side of the gap. You’ll wear a temporary while your final restoration is made.
3. Placing the final crown or bridge
At your next visit, we remove the temporary and bond the custom restoration in place. We check the fit and your bite carefully, then send you on your way. Most people are surprised how natural it feels right away.
What are crowns and bridges made of?
We use modern materials — usually porcelain or zirconia — that are strong, durable, and color-matched to your other teeth. Done well, they’re hard to tell apart from natural teeth, even up close.
How long do they last?
With good care, crowns and bridges typically last 10–15 years or more. Many last much longer. The keys: regular brushing and flossing, routine check-ups, and avoiding hard things like ice or pen caps that could crack any tooth.
How much do crowns and bridges cost in Alexandria, VA?
Cost depends on the material, your specific situation, and any prep work needed (like a root canal first). We’ll always give you a clear, upfront estimate. Many crowns and bridges are partially covered by dental insurance, and our membership plan offers savings as well.
