Is There Treatment for TMJ?

March 12, 2025 | Posted By: Dr. Charissa Chin

We’re pleased to offer TMJ treatment in Alexandria to help eliminate symptoms and restore jaw joint health. We offer various options and use advanced technology to aid your TMJ diagnosis and treatment.

What Is TMJ? What Are Its Causes and Symptoms?

TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. The abbreviated form is often used to describe conditions of the joints, including damage, dysfunction, and inflammation. It may also be referred to as TMD.

The TMJs attach the lower jaw to the skull and allow purposeful movements like chewing, yawning, and speaking. When the joints are not working correctly, you may notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the head, neck, shoulders, and jaw joints
  • A clicking or popping sound in the joints when chewing or yawning
  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
  • Mood changes or general irritability
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Tooth wear if your TMJ is related to bruxism (teeth grinding)

Without treatment, TMJ symptoms can worsen over time. Causes may include anatomical abnormalities, joint injuries, dental misalignment, and bruxism.

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can also cause exaggerated musculature in front of the ears, exacerbated pain in the head, neck, shoulders, and jaw joints, and even dental health issues. Fortunately, we can create a treatment plan to tackle both conditions.

Diagnosing and Treating TMJ with Your Alexandria Dentist

Your dentist can use digital imaging and 3-D cone beam technology to diagnose TMJ and plan its treatment.

TMJ treatment options depend on the level of TMJ or its underlying cause. We will customize your therapy to address your specific needs.

Treatment may include specific exercises, pain medications, and splint therapy to help the upper and lower jaws connect correctly, allowing your TMJs to heal. Your dentist may also suggest a custom nightguard to halt bruxism.
