Root canals aren’t what they used to be.
If you’ve been told you need a root canal, take a deep breath. The reputation is much worse than the reality. With modern techniques and the way we approach care at LIFE A.I.D., most patients say it was easier than getting a routine filling.
A root canal saves a tooth that would otherwise need to be pulled. That alone makes it worth it — keeping your natural tooth is almost always better than replacing it.
“Patients walk in nervous and walk out saying ‘that’s it?’ Modern root canals are gentle, precise, and routine. Our job is to make you comfortable from start to finish.”
Why might you need a root canal?
The inside of every tooth has a soft tissue called pulp — nerves and blood vessels — that can become infected or damaged. When that happens, you need a root canal to save the tooth.
Common signs:
- A toothache that won’t go away
- Pain when you bite down or chew
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
- A pimple-like bump on your gums
- Swelling around a tooth
- A tooth that’s turned darker than the others
Sometimes there are no symptoms at all — we catch the problem on an X-ray during a routine check-up. Either way, treating it sooner is always easier than waiting.
What happens during a root canal
1. We get you completely numb
This is the most important part. You won’t feel anything sharp or painful — just some gentle pressure. If you’d like sedation to help you relax, just ask.
2. We clean out the infected tissue
Using precise instruments, we carefully remove the damaged pulp from inside the tooth and clean the canals thoroughly. Modern tools make this much faster and more comfortable than it used to be.
3. We seal the tooth
Once the inside is clean, we fill and seal it with a special material to prevent re-infection.
4. We protect it with a crown
Most teeth that have had a root canal need a crown to protect them. This usually happens at a follow-up visit. The crown lets you bite, chew, and smile like normal — for many years.
Will it hurt?
During the procedure: no. You’ll be completely numb, and we’ll check in with you throughout to make sure you stay comfortable. Afterward, some mild soreness is normal for a day or two — usually easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Most patients tell us the relief from the original tooth pain is dramatic — they feel better right away.
Why save the tooth?
You could pull the tooth instead — but keeping your natural tooth is almost always the better choice. A root-canaled tooth, protected with a crown, can last the rest of your life. Replacing a tooth (with an implant or bridge) is usually more expensive and more involved than saving it.
Our approach: comfort first
At LIFE A.I.D., your comfort during a root canal isn’t an afterthought — it’s how we plan the entire visit. We use modern, precise techniques, take time to keep you fully numb, and check in often. Warm blankets, headphones, breaks whenever you need them. You’re in control.
If you’re in pain, please don’t wait.
The longer an infection sits, the more complicated it becomes. Call us at (703) 253-7399 and we’ll find a way to see you quickly — often the same day.
